ELGIN AREA CHAMBER TO HONOR OUTGOING CEO

Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce will host a retirement celebration for Carol Gieske, its outgoing president and CEO, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, in the Building E main dining room on the Elgin Community College campus.

The event will begin with an open house, followed by a brief presentation at 5 p.m. and a time at which stories about Gieske can be shared, according to the chamber’s website.

Gieske will retire in July and is assisting with the selection of her successor. She started at the chamber in July 2007 overseeing marketing and special events and has been at its helm since 2012.

EAST DUNDEE HOLDING ARTS MASTER PLAN MEETING

East Dundee will hold a new arts master plan meeting from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, in the second-floor meeting room of the East Dundee Police Department, 115 E. 3rd St.

The village is working with staff from Northern Illinois University to create the plan, according to the village newsletter. The document will cover various aspects of the arts in East Dundee, including visual, music, written, performing and culinary arts.

Volunteers are needed to serve on a task force that will meet three times this summer to come up with plan ideas and goals.

ECC PROJECT BACKBACK RECRUITING VOLUNTEERS

Elgin Community College will host a Project Backpack Volunteer Party from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, in Room B180, Building B, on the college campus.

The party is to recognize those who have previously helped with the event and to recruit new volunteers, according to a social media post.

Project Backpack provides school supplies to those in need enrolled in the fall semester at ECC and students who will attend schools within the boundaries of districts U-46, D300, D301, D303 and D20. The giveaway will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, in the Building J Events Center.

STUDENT OPERA BEING STAGED JUNE 27 AT ECC

The Hamilton Wings SCORE! program will present the original student opera “When We Are Older” at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 27, at the Blizzard Theater in Elgin Community College Building H.

According to the Hamilton Wings website, the show spans a 15-year period and “explores whether time can truly heal the wounds of the past or if some bridges, once burned, remain lost to the echoes of memory.”

WONDERS OF MUD AT HAWTHORNE HILL CENTER

International Mud Day will be celebrated as part of “The Wonders of Mud” event being held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday, June 28, at Hawthorne Hill Nature Center, 28 Brookside Drive, Elgin.

The day’s activities will include a mud pie-making competition, painting with mud, exploring pond muck and face painting, according to a social media post.

“Give your children a chance to get muddy and leave the mess with us,” the post says.

The cost is $8 for Elgin residents, $10 for nonresidents. Registration is required at bit.ly/GetMuddyHHNC.
