A man surrendered to police Monday in connection with a February hit-and-run case in New York City that ended up having a Lake County tie, according to police and published reports.
According to news reports, Gregory Ventura, 35, of Brooklyn, turned himself in on charges that he struck and killed Joshua Germain, 31, with a vehicle as Germain exited an Uber on a Brooklyn street early on Feb. 15.
Ventura fled but was identified by police, who later traced the vehicle involved – a luxury SUV – to a Mundelein repair shop, authorities said.
Mundelein Police Commander Rick Wilfenger said Monday that his department had been contacted by New York police in mid-March about the vehicle. Mundelein officers went to the auto repair business in the 1200 block of Townline Road and found the SUV had been dropped off to be fixed, he said.
Police obtained a search warrant and impounded the vehicle. New York police took custody of the SUV on April 1 and hauled it back there.
According to a news report, Ventura drives a semi that transports cars and had used a truck to haul the Nissan Murano to Mundelein. New York police learned that the SUV was in Illinois through license plate readers, according to reports.
