A Union Township man died Saturday night after Portage Police said he disregarded a red light while riding a motor-driven scooter and struck a pickup truck.

Sean McLinn, 43, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a release from Portage Police.

Around 9:13 p.m. Saturday, police responded to the intersection of U.S. 6 and Swanson Road for a report of a collision involving a motor-driven cycle. Callers to 911 reported that an off-duty nurse had stopped at the scene and was providing CPR to the injured rider, according to police.

The initial investigation indicates that a 2015 GMC Sierra pickup truck, driven by a 35-year-old Hobart man, was eastbound on U.S. 6 and crossing the intersection at Swanson Road, police said. A northbound 2015 Yamaha YW50/Zuma motor-driven cycle was northbound on Swanson Road and collided with the passenger side of the pickup truck, police said.

Witnesses reported that the Yamaha disregarded the red light for northbound traffic, according to police.

The driver of the pickup truck was not injured and displayed no signs of impairment, police said. Initial tests indicate the driver of the pickup did not have alcohol in his system. Toxicology results for the deceased are pending.

Police thanked the off-duty nurse who stopped to provide help, and the assistance of the Portage Fire Department and the Porter County Coroner’s Office.
