A portrait of a bygone era? A connection to ancestors? A charming splash of nostalgia?
Or business cards from businesses no longer in business?

Chicago Public Schools leaders say board must pass budget to make September payroll
Despite skepticism from some board members, Chicago Public Schools leaders said yesterday that the district’s $9.88 billion budget must be passed this month or it risks missing payroll for its 45,000 employees.
If the budget isn’t approved, “the immediate consequence … is we wouldn’t be able to make payroll in September,” CPS CEO Macquline King told the Tribune in an interview. “If we’re not able to make payroll, then it ultimately disrupts services for our students.”

Piping plovers Pepper and Blaze hatch 2 new chicks at Waukegan Beach
After a dramatic nesting season, Waukegan’s piping plover mates welcomed two chicks.
The first of the “cotton balls with legs” hatched early Sunday morning, with a second following hours later. New parents Blaze and Pepper continue to incubate the remaining two eggs in the nest, the Lake County Audubon Society said in a post on social media.
Food icon: Buritt Bulloch, the Donut King at Old Fashioned Donuts in Chicago
Buritt Bulloch, who turns 88 this year, can still be found making doughnuts in the front window of his shop on the South Side of Chicago. Old Fashioned Donuts opened in the Roseland neighborhood in 1972. The featherlight raised glazed has flown off the shelf since the beginning, but his cult favorite apple fritter didn’t come until later.
Mr. B, as he’s been known to longtime regulars, or increasingly as the Donut King, used to tell me unprompted how many more years he’s got in him to make doughnuts. But not recently, and I didn’t ask, because I don’t want to know. You know where to find him, for now.
