The body of a man recovered from the Fox River in downtown Elgin Thursday has been confirmed as that of the suspect who fled police a month earlier, an Elgin Police Department social media post said.
Victor Marin, 41, of Elgin, was identified by the Kane County coroner’s office with the assistance of a forensic odontologist, an office news release said. His preliminary cause of death was drowning.
Marin, whose body was found near the 200 block of South Grove Avenue, was the man police had been trying to take into custody on June 26 when he went into the river and could not be located, police said in their Facebook post.
Officials said at the time that the suspect their were pursuing was believed to have been interfering with railroad operations near Highland Avenue and State Street. He was was approached by officers but opted to go into the river rather than surrender; police noted in their report that he was carrying a large knife.
Rescuers tried to reach him in the water but he went under and could not be located despite a two-day search, police said.
No other details on Marin’s alleged railroad interference have been released.
