The founding director of the Pitchfork Music Festival last week applied for a permit to hold the festival Sept. 10-12 in Union Park, according to paperwork obtained by the Tribune through a Freedom of Information Act request.
In his Jan. 12 permit application to the Chicago Park District, Michael Reed said he is expecting 200 performers and 19,000 daily attendees at the Near West Side park. A Pitchfork representative did not immediately return a Tribune request for comment. Dates for a 2021 festival or a lineup have not been announced at pitchforkmusicfestival.com.

It’s unclear whether there will be any music festivals in Chicago this year as the coronavirus pandemic continues and vaccine rollout lags behind expectations. Dates for Lollapalooza have not been announced, though representatives for Riot Fest have said their festival will happen Sept. 17-19 in Douglass Park with My Chemical Romance, the Smashing Pumpkins, Run the Jewels and other acts set to perform.
Pitchfork representatives announced in May 2020 the festival would not take place in July 2020 as scheduled because of COVID-19. The announcement came weeks after Reed also applied to hold the festival in August, according to a Park District permit application the Tribune obtained last year through FOIA. That event — just like Lollapalooza, Riot Fest and other summer festivals — didn’t happen either.
