Cardinal Bernardin`s ”blunt” speech to the Catholic clergy very accurately points out the stress of being a priest in today`s society. Is it any wonder that those who proclaim and practice their Christian faith would feel anxiety in today`s secular, humanist society? (After all, isn`t the benchmark of success a good sex life, swelled bank account and plenty of leisure time to enjoy the ”good life?” The idea of commitment, self-sacrifice and personal denial hardly seem appealing, or even of any value to today`s ”enlightened” society.
We as Christians are called to be the salt of the Earth, not one of the crowd.
