A mortar shell allegedly fired by the outlawed Irish Republican Army at a police-army post killed a reserve policeman and wounded two passersby, police said Sunday.

The mortar, fired from a nearby alley, damaged the perimeter wall of the heavily fortified New Barnsley security post in West Belfast Saturday night.

The 42-year-old reservist, received head injuries and died in hospital.
