Cub catcher Jody Davis will be sidelined a week to 10 days after suffering a chipped bone on the tip of his right little finger during Tuesday`s 9-3 loss to St. Louis.

”I couldn`t believe it at first. I knew it was sore, and I looked down at it and this finger (next to his little finger) was swollen,” said Davis, who was struck with a foul tip by Vince Coleman during the Cardinals` five-run third inning.

”I don`t remember exactly how it happened, but I know there were men on base, so I had to keep my right hand out in front of my body. The foul tip kind of smashed my two fingers against my shin guard.

”My little finger looks like a pencil eraser on the joint. Just gripping the bat would be a problem now. I don`t think throwing the ball would be a problem. It`s awful sore now. The baseball stitches are still indented on it.”

The Cubs hope they won`t have to put Davis on the disabled list. He`ll be replaced by veteran Jim Sundberg, acquired last week in a trade with Kansas City.
