A newspaper reporter who suspects his paper of planting phony stories about a strategic metal asks Lee (Bruce Boxleitner) for help in investigating what turns out to be a plot to destroy the nation`s supply of Tritanium on a repeat episode of ”Scarecrow and Mrs. King” (7 p.m. Thursday on CBS-Ch. 2). Amanda (Kate Jackson )joins Lee by going undercover at the newspaper. Her sleuthing eventually links the paper`s editor to a Romanian secret agent and the top science adviser to the president. What this trio have in common becomes crucial to the survival of the country.
”Scarecrow,” which just completed its fourth year, is the most recent target of a ”save-the-show” campaign. CBS claims poor ratings as the reason for not renewing it for next season. The current effort on ”Scarecrow`s”
behalf is being spearheaded by R.I.F.T. (Responsibility In Family Television), a Texas-based organization. Similar campaigns helped save ”Cagney & Lacey” a few years ago and ”Designing Women” this year.
