A fire in a South Side apartment building early Sunday killed a woman and injured two other people. Flora Thomas, 49, suffered extensive burns in the fire at 6049 S. Damen Ave. Thomas, who lived in an apartment there, was pronounced dead on arrival at Holy Cross Hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Johnny Moton, 33, and his wife, Barbara, 34, who also lived in an apartment there, jumped from a window in the building and escaped with injuries to their hips and legs. They were listed in fair condition at Holy Cross Hospital, the spokeswoman said. Investigators say careless smoking may have led to the fire.
