Sara Lee Corp. posted record earnings and sales for the fiscal fourth quarter and full year, with results paced by the Chicago firm`s foods and personal products segments.
In the quarter ended June 27, net income rose 16 percent, to $71.6 million, or 63 cents a share, from $61.6 million, or 56 cents a share, in the year-earlier period. Sales climbed 19 percent, to $2.4 billion from $2 billion.
For the year, net income advanced 20 percent, to $267.1 million, or $2.35 a share, from $223.5 million, or $2.02 a share, a year earlier.
Sales increased 15 percent, to $9.2 billion from $7.9 billion.
The latest quarter and fiscal year include results from Bil Mar Foods, acquired May 27.
For the fiscal year, pretax operating income for the U.S. consumer foods group jumped 41 percent, to $184.9 million, as sales rose 14 percent, to $3.19 billion. The international consumer foods segment`s operating income jumped 39 percent, to $98.1 million, as sales rose 10 percent, to $1.47 billion.
Operating income for the consumer personal products group rose 24 percent, to $178.6 million, as sales increased 13 percent, to $1.63 billion.
The household products group`s operating income rose 2 percent, to $120.4 million, as sales rose 15 percent, to $1.09 million. Food service earnings were flat at $49.8 million, as sales rose 24 percent, to $1.89 billion.
