Gibson & Drysdale.

Fifty years ago, it might have sounded like a vaudeville team.

This year, in a baseball season that seemingly has had more than its share of beanball incidents, the names of former big-league pitchers Bob Gibson and Don Drysdale are as prevalent as when they were playing.

To Gibson, who was in Chicago last weekend for the Equitable Old-Timers Game, it is no laughing matter.

”Whenever the subject of intimidation comes up, like the (Andre) Dawson beaning, I`m sure to get a lot of calls and interviews,” said Gibson. ”I`m sure it happens to Don, too.

”I don`t know how he feels about it, but I`ve had it up to here,” he added, pointing to his eyebrows. ”Every pitcher tried to intimidate batters when I played. Maybe I was just a little more successful.”

Was there anyone the Cardinal Hall of Famer couldn`t intimidate?

”Frank Robinson,” he said, without pausing. ”He hung that elbow right out over the plate. You could hit him four times and he didn`t flinch.

”He`d just put that elbow right back over the plate.”
