In the spirit of this ”Top 10 Movies” issue of The Arts, following are critics` picks from far-flung locales:

”Broadcast News” swept the New York Film Critics` Circle Awards, winning for best picture, best direction and screenplay (by James L. Brooks)

and best actress (Holly Hunter). Jack Nicholson won as best actor (for ”The Witches of Eastwick,” ”Ironweed” and a small, uncredited role in

”Broadcast News”).

”Hope and Glory” took Los Angeles Film Critics Awards for best film, as well as best screenplay and direction (both by John Boorman). Steve Martin

(”Roxanne”) shared best-actor honors with Nicholson; and Holly Hunter

(”News”) split the best-actress award with Sally Kirkland (”Anna”).

BIG HITS ON VIDEO As for the biggest videos of 1987, the Top 10 rentals, according to Billboard, were ”Short Circuit,” ”Top Gun,” ”Back to School,” ”Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” ”Down and Out in Beverly Hills,” ”The Color of Money,” ”Ferris Bueller`s Day Off,” ”Stand by Me,” ”Ruthless People” and ”Aliens.”

Top 10 in sales were ”Jane Fonda`s Low Impact Aerobic Workout,” ”Jane Fonda`s New Workout,” ”Sleeping Beauty,” ”Top Gun,” ”Callanetics,”

”The Sound of Music,” ”Kathy Smith`s Body Basics,” ”Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” ”Star Trek III-The Search for Spock” and ”Star Trek II-The Wrath of Khan.”

`ELVIS`: BROADWAY BOUND It was probably inevitable: ”Elvis, An American Musical” will open July 1, 1988-at the Las Vegas Hilton.

”Presley was the greatest star ever to appear in Las Vegas,” reads an announcement from the Las Vegas Hilton, which is producing the Broadway-bound show. Presley appeared at the hotel ”on 16 separate occasions from 1969 to 1977 totaling 47 weeks.

”He never played to an empty seat in the 1,600 seat Hilton Showroom.”

Though there`s no word yet on who will portray Elvis, the impersonator will be aided by two ”immense” screens, three 35-mm. projectors, film clips and documentary footage.
