– The Sox have minor-league farm teams at Vancouver (AAA, Pacific Coast League), Birmingham (AA, Southern League), Tampa (A, Florida State League), South Bend (A, Midwest League), Utica (A, New York-Penn League), and Sarasota (Rookie, Gulf Coast League).

HAROLD, HAROLD

– Harold Baines won the American League`s Outstanding Designated Hitter award last season. He hit .290 as a DH with 135 hits and 89 runs batted in. Baines led all designated hitters in at-bats, hits, doubles, runs batted in, and game-winning RBIs. Greg Luzinski had twice won the award for the Sox, in 1983 and 1981.

SHOOTING BLANKS

– The Sox were shut out only four times in 1987, three times against Seattle; their pitchers had 12 shutouts, including two each against California, Texas and Toronto. Only Boston, with 13, had more shutouts than the Sox.

DAY AND NIGHT

– The Sox were 38-43 at home and 39-42 on the road, which was fourth-best in the American League. They were 38-46 against the Eastern Division, including a league-best 23-19 on the road, and 39-39 against the Western Division. The Sox were 55-62 at night and 22-23 during the day. They were 8-9 in extra innings, 1-3 in double-headers, 19-22 in one-run games, 67-71 on grass, 10-14 on artificial turf, 24-32 vs. left-handers and 53-53 against right-handers. The Sox scored 394 runs at home to the opposition`s 414; they scored 354 runs on the road. The average time of a Sox game was 2:55 at home and 2:44 away.

– There were 162 home runs hit at Comiskey Park in 1987. The Sox hit 72

(15 by Ivan Calderon and 12 each by Harold Baines and Greg Walker); their opponents hit 90 (17 by Baltimore, including 4 by Eddie Murray). The Sox hit 101 home runs on the road, including 15 at Texas (4 by Walker) and 12 at California (4 by Fisk). Their opponents hit 99. Walker hit the team`s only grand slam, June 2 at Texas.

NUMBERS

– The Sox have retired six numbers-Nellie Fox`s 2, Luke Appling`s 4, Minnie Minoso`s 9, Luis Aparicio`s 11, Ted Lyons` 16 and Billy Pierce`s 19.

IN A PINCH

– Jerry Hairston led American League pinch-hitters in runs batted in with 10. Hairston hit .250 in 32 at-bats as pinch-hitter with 15 total bases. He`s the club`s all-time pinch-hit king with 86. He broke Smoky Burgess` former club record of 50.

MILESTONES

– Last July 22 at Comiskey Park, Harold Baines victimized Baltimore`s Mike Boddicker for his 155th home run in a Sox uniform, breaking Bill Melton`s all-time club career mark.

– In 1987, Ozzie Guillen and Ivan Calderon both had three doubles in a game to match the league`s season-high; Floyd Bannister and Jose DeLeon, both since traded, each allowed four homers in a game to match the league`s season- high.
