Should a man who can`t even decide what state he`s from hold the nation`s highest office? I`m referring, of course, to George Bush, who claims Texas, Maine and New Hampshire as home turf.

George is probably banking on the theory that most voters are too dense to notice the discrepancy. After all, the majority of Americans bought Ronald Reagan`s notion that the federal deficit could be eliminated by simultaneously cutting taxes and increasing expenditures.

Not that I`m equating Republicans and car salesmen, but here`s further proof of mass naivete. The next time you`re out driving, take an informal tally of imitation ragtop roofs on automobiles. They mimic the tent-like shape of a convertible but don`t actually function. Who could be duped into paying for such nonsense? More people than you`d expect.

If I were Bush, I`d take his multiple statehood theme to the limit and lay claim to all 50. It could be an unbeatable strategy for winning the election.
