The Cook County Board on Monday approved $8.2 million in community development block grants for 39 suburbs, most of them in the southern and western portions of the county.
The leading recipients include Chicago Heights, $805,675; Maywood, $676,500; Harvey, $563,200; Blue Island, $559,000; and Phoenix, $414,718.
The funds are earmarked for public projects such as renovation of single- family homes; street lighting; sewer and water system construction; code enforcement; street and alley paving; and construction of parking lots and tot lots.
Twelve community organizations received another $2.7 million in grants, bringing the total amount approved by the board to more than $11 million.
The organizations will use the money for fair-housing counseling, assistance of minority contractors, flood control, modernization of public housing and improvement of senior citizen facilities.
The approved funds represented more than one-third of the $30.7 million requested by suburban groups, said William Doyle, chief administrative officer for the county. The money must be used in areas that will benefit low- and moderate-income people.
The recipient suburbs, including 28 in the south and southwest, 6 in the west and 5 in the north, are as follows:
Bartlett: Curb and gutter construction, $25,000.
Bellwood: Improvements on Boys` Club of Bellwood, $50,000; street construction, $60,000; curb and gutter replacement, $30,000; sidewalk construction, $7,000; water and sewer construction, $6,000; total, $153,000.
Blue Island: Residential renovation, $150,000; Little League recreational facilities, $50,000; parking lot resurfacing and installation of street lights, $75,000; code enforcement, $4,000; street lights for the northeast, $50,000; Fulton Street sewer lining, $230,000; total, $559,000.
Bridgeview: Street construction, Moose area, $250,000.
Burbank: Construction of senior citizens park, $80,000.
Burnham: Component parts for flood and storm drainage sewer, $200,000.
