Yielding to a group of residents, the Des Plaines City Council has rejected an automobile dealer`s request for a zoning variance that would have allowed him to build a storage lot near their homes.
Many of an estimated 50 people who attended the Monday night council meeting booed aldermen who voiced support for the variance. It would have cleared the way for Kevin Mize, owner of Ridge Motors, 1533 Des Plaines Ave., to build a gravel storage lot and surrounding fence adjacent to his dealership.
The variance request was rejected 12-4, as aldermen opposing it said they were supporting the wishes of nearby residents. ”The people make the changes in this community, not the people at these desks,” said Ald. Carmen Sarlo
(6th).
