A 68-year-old Downers Grove man was sentenced to 4 years of probation Thursday for fatally shooting an intoxicated man who punched him as he left his West Side business in October 1988.

Joseph Slode of 6315 Prentice Drive, in the west suburb, was convicted of second-degree murder by Cook County Criminal Court Judge James Bailey after a bench trial last month. Bailey noted that Slode, the owner of a dental laboratory at 4030 W. Division St., had no previous criminal record and that the victim, Willie Ferrell, 51, had been the aggressor.
