– Waukegan East sectional-Retiring Hersey coach George Zigman is going out with a bang. His Huskies are alive and kicking after they outlasted Waukegan West 68-61 Tuesday night. Dimitrious Kouzoukas (17 points) sank two jump shots to give Hersey a 58-54 lead it never relinquished. Kirk Proctor`s basket with 1 minute left narrowed the gap to 58-57, but Brian Kubitz and Kouzoukas each hit two free throws to put Hersey up 62-57. Russ Koziol (15 points) added two free throws with :26 left. ”We had it won near the end, we tried to give it back and then we won it again at the end,” said Zigman.
Mark Sowa had 12 points and John Barnes 10 for Hersey (17-10). Marcus Zachery had 17 and Abraham Edwards 15 for Waukegan West (15-13).
– Fremd sectional-Mike Cieslinski scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half to lead Conant (22-6) to a 72-68 victory over Dundee-Crown (16-12). Matt Maras` two free throws with 1:55 left boosted Conant`s lead to 69-66. With 1 minute left, a jumper by Jabbar Cox (29 points) pulled Dundee-Crown within 69-68. But a Cieslinski jumper made it 71-68. After Dundee-Crown missed a three-pointer with :03 left, Jeff Rehfeldt (17 points) made the first of two free throws to clinch the Cougars` victory.
”I can`t say enough about Cieslinski,” said Conant coach Tom McCormack. – Elgin sectional-Elgin (20-8) took a 33-26 halftime lead with a 10-0 run midway through the second quarter, then opened up a 13-point margin early in the third quarter while shelling Rockford Jefferson 76-62 behind Jessie Henderson (26 points), Mike Strasser (17) and Brian Hensgen (13 points, 13 rebounds). Jefferson (10-18) was led by Dion Simpson`s 28 points.
”We played good enough to win tonight, but if we play like this again we won`t be in the tournament very long,” said Elgin coach Jim Harrington. ”We hit some big free throws in the fourth quarter (10 of 14) and we got a great effort off the bench from Hensgen and Phet Fayavong (5 points).”
– East St. Louis sectional-Chris McKinney and Artagus Williams each scored 19 points and Maurice Horton added 11 as three-time defending state champion East St. Louis Lincoln (18-7) blazed to a 31-20 halftime lead and held off Bethalto Civic Memorial (17-10) 63-52.
PUBLIC LEAGUE PLAYOFFS
– Chicago Vocational 45, Calumet 44-Joe Weaver drilled a three-point shot as time expired to give CVS (22-6) its victory over visiting Calumet (14-12). ”We weren`t looking for a three,” said CVS coach Dick Cook. ”We told Joe or Vernell (Brent) to push it up and take the first good shot. Everybody else was supposed to hit the boards.”
”It was a great shot by Weaver,” said Calumet coach Johnie Butler.
”But after he made it, I thought we had at least 2 or 3 seconds left on the clock, and the referee didn`t acknowledge our timeout signal. Furthermore, their fans stormed the court right after the basket and before the final horn sounded. That should have been an automatic technical.”
CVS rallied from a six-point first-quarter deficit behind Juwan Howard
(20 points, 14 rebounds), Weaver (10 points, 6 rebounds) and Andrew Jones
(8 points, 6 rebounds) to trail just 15-14 at halftime.
– Westinghouse 82, Farragut 67-Forward Ernest Sivels had 11 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter, when No. 5 Westinghouse held Farragut at bay. Sivels and center Daniel Crosby (15 points) each had 10 rebounds. Len Moffett had 10 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists for the Warriors. Lemont Johnson had 19 points and 9 rebounds for Farragut.
– Taft 78, Steinmetz 61-Kenny Pratt scored 26 points and Kevin Martin 21 as Taft breezed. Taft (22-5) pulled out to a 36-22 halftime lead. Anthony Davidson led Steinmetz (11-14) with 24 points.
– Sullivan 91, Schurz 82-Sullivan (19-8) pulled out to a 20-0 lead and coasted behind Bernard Choice (25 points, 11 assists) and Craig Delaney (20 points, 14 rebounds). Johnny Walker led Schurz (4-22) with 21 points.
– Prosser 64, Lane Tech 62-Prosser held off Lane (13-11) behind 16 points from Christopher Watt and 15 from Stephen Williams. Lane`s Ken Love (20 points) hit a jumper to cut Prosser`s lead to 63-62 with :50 left, but a Williams free throw ended the scoring.
– Young 72, Manley 36-Charles Barnes had 17 points and 10 rebounds as Young
(21-7) beat Manley for the third time this season.
– Crane 78, Marshall 67-Sharrod Clay scored 32 points to lead Crane (16-9)
past Marshall (10-17). Clay had 11 points, including three three-pointers, as Crane went from a 20-19 deficit after one quarter to a 37-32 halftime lead.
– Englewood 74, Robeson 71-After Robeson missed a shot, Englewood`s Donnie Cockrell made a layup with :05 left and two technical free throws after Robeson called a timeout it didn`t have, helping Englewood overcome a 71-70 deficit in the final :20. A halfcourt shot by Robeson`s Maurice Hicks (20 points) bounced off the rim at the buzzer. Cockrell led Robeson (15-12) with 16 points.
– Gage Park 78, Tilden 75-Maurice Fullilove scored 27 points and Mark Mudd had 8 of his 21 in the fourth quarter as Gage Park (17-7) held off Tilden (11-11). – Bowen 74, Kenwood 61-Anthony Braxton scored 26 points and Neville Dyson 18 as Bowen (15-11) built a 40-28 halftime lead. Anton Jones had 18 points for Kenwood (14-13).
– South Shore 55, Fenger 48-Seandell Carter scored 16 points for South Shore
(16-9). Trevor Banks led Fenger (17-9) with 12.
– Collins 69, Near North 61-Collins, trailing 49-44 after three quarters, rallied to win. Jermaine Ezell led Collins (16-10) with 28 points. Johnny Jackson paced Near North (16-4) with 12.
– Foreman 65, Senn 58-Reggie Smith scored 23 points as Foreman (22-4)
eliminated Senn (4-19). Yaki Saunders`s 21 points led Senn.
