Moline sectional-Sterling (25-5) moved into the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1975. Kelly Preston (17 points) and Ryan Sullivan (15) led the way in a 65-61 victory over Galesburg. Galesburg (12-15) led 16-15 after one quarter, but Sterling outscored the Silver Streaks 16-10 in the second period to lead 31-26 at halftime. Todd Kyser had 19 points for Galesburg, which had upset Rock Island in Tuesday`s sectional semifinals.
Waukegan sectional-Hersey posted a 74-70 victory over Lake Forest in the title game. The win puts the 18-10 Huskies into the Evanston supersectional against Rolling Meadows Tuesday at Northwestern`s Welsh-Ryan Arena.
”We`re as good as anybody and we come to play,” said Hersey coach George Zigman. ”We played the game at our tempo and forced them to play defense.”
The Huskies, whose biggest lead was 66-54 in the fourth quarter, were led by Dimitrious Kouzoukas (21 points), Brian Pihl (17) and John Barnes (15 points, 7 rebounds). Robert Bice had 21 points and Brian Geraghty 15
(including three three-pointers in the first half) for Lake Forest (20-9).
