White Sox manager Jeff Torborg, at least early, has used Lance Johnson at leadoff and in the eighth spot, depending on the starting pitcher. Johnson, who is comfortable anywhere, has a preference:
”I feel my speed could be utilized more leading off, but I just like to get in there. Whatever Jeff decides, that`s fine with me.”
A switch: The makeup of Wednesday`s snowout in Milwaukee will be part of an Aug. 2 twi-nighter in County Stadium, not Aug. 3 as originally announced by the Brewers.
Thomas watch: First baseman Frank Thomas was 1 for 1 with three walks and a sacrifice fly for Double-A Birmingham in a double-header vs. Charlotte Wednesday night. In six games (the Barons are 5-1), Thomas is batting a mere .600 (9 for 15) with three doubles, a homer, eight RBIs and seven walks.
For the memories: Ed ”Hard Luck” Smith, who gave up the game`s only run when Bob Feller no-hit the White Sox on April 16, 1940, in Comiskey Park, will join Feller in signing autographs in the Picnic Area before Friday ceremonies honoring them both.
