Hothouse Flowers
Home (London) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
Sometimes this Irish quintet mixes U2`s preachiness with Donovan`s hippy sentimentality. So much for young idealism. But on the understated
”Christchurch Bells,” ”Sweet Marie” and ”Trying to Get Through,”
their prayerful passion is riveting. The call-and-response between Liam O`Maonlai`s voice and piano evokes the spirit of Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin, while the mix of traditional instruments, saxophone and fiddle gives the music a buoyant, folkish charm.
