Adam Peterson might soon be headed for reassignment to the bullpen. Peterson, who hasn`t won in 11 career starts, including six this season, couldn`t get through five innings on Saturday even though his teammates gave him a 7-0 lead.
”There might be a time down the road that he`s going to help in the bullpen,” manager Jeff Torborg said. ”He`s a big power right-hander, and that`s the kind of guy you could have to throw every day out of the bullpen.” Torborg said the White Sox had planned to use Peterson out of the bullpen, but the rotation needed more help when he was recalled from Triple-A Vancouver this year.
Peterson is 0-1 with a 4.05 earned-run average. He has lasted a total of 33 2/3 innings in his six starts.
Lost and found: Ivan Calderon literally dropped his paycheck in New York this weekend. The Sox received a call from a person claiming to have found the check, payable to Calderon in the amount of close to $50,000, on a street outside Yankee Stadium. The Sox left the unidentified person two tickets for Sunday`s game and offered a reward.
Mr. Dependable:Ozzie Guillen has played in every game and took part in the All-Star Game last week.
”I feel lousy,” said Guillen, whose sore ankles are bothering him again. ”I`ll play this week. We`ve got a couple of night games, so I`ll get some rest.”
Torborg said he`d keep Guillen in the lineup until Guillen asked out of it.
”He lets you know when he`s really tired,” Torborg said. ”Normally, he wants to be in there every day, but when he asks for a day off you know he really needs it.”
And how does Guillen decide? ”I pick my pitchers,” he said.
Hall pass: The White Sox on Sunday shipped Melido Perez`s cap and a ball he threw during his six-inning no-hitter Thursday night to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. ”It`s the original,” publicist Dana Noel said of the cap. Record pace: Bobby Thigpen is on a pace to save a major-league record 59 games. The record is Dave Righetti`s 46, set in 1986.
Thigpen stayed in the league lead ahead of Oakland`s Dennis Eckersley with his 30th save Sunday.
