Although some observers have remarked on the shakiness of the art market lately, that hasn`t stopped a half-dozen or so galleries from cropping up between last year`s fall roundup and this. Can`t they see the writing on the wall?

To which they might reply, what wall? For as anyone will tell you, the gallery business is nothing if not unpredictable, and few can prognosticate with complete assurance.

For those itching to get out of the house or office on a Friday evening-say, this Friday evening, as in tonight-and cruise the various gallery districts-oh yes, there are at least three at last count-and maybe see some art on your way to the beer and wine or better yet run into some

unaccompanied, intriguing-looking art-type person decked out in once-again-cool complete black, on your way to the beer and wine-this sort of

encounter being the art season opening experience par excellence-the number of new galleries is an embarrassment of riches. For the put-upon scrivener compiling the burgeoning list, it`s an 800-pound gorilla in need of a visit to Jenny Craig.

That is, with even more galleries and about the same amount of space to put them in, not every gallery made the final cut. Be sure to check Friday`s future weekly listings for a more complete update.

And as far as socializing is concerned, the Museum of Contemporary Art`s New Group is once again sponsoring a tent party on Superior Street between Orleans and Sedgwick Streets, with music, food and drink. Admission is $20 in advance for New Group members, $25 for museum members and the general public. All tickets at the door are $25. For more information, call Karin Lesica at 280-5163.
