Loretto Hospital officials Thursday said they will appeal a decision by the federal government that threatens to cut off the hospital`s Medicare and Medicaid funding.
The hospital, located at 645 S. Central Ave., is the only hospital left in the city`s low-income Austin neighborhood, said hospital spokesman Robert Quakenbush.
Earlier this month, the U.S. Health Care Financing Adminstration said it would cut funding if Loretto didn`t correct violations that included unsanitary conditions in surgical suites and poor nursing supervision.
Hospital officials said Loretto ”has already corrected many of the deficiencies cited” and ”has been working diligently toward addressing the remainder.” Officials said they will request an extension of the Oct. 30 deadline set by the agency.
