– Warren 2, Libertyville 0-Warren (8-5-1, 3-1-1 in the North Suburban Conference) got its first soccer victory ever against Libertyville, and in doing so handed the No. 6 Wildcats (8-1-5) their first loss of the season. Jim Pettinato got a first-period goal for the Blue Devils, and Morten Strand tallied in the third quarter. Goalkeeper Chris Cordeil had 18 saves to earn his third shutout of the season, thanks in part to a big defensive effort led by Jason Parhach and Keith Saum.
– Fremd 1, Rolling Meadows 0-Mark Hein took a pass from Bob Maramba and scored with 16:52 left in the fourth quarter as No. 3 Fremd (12-2-2) prevailed in the Mid-Suburban crossover. Goaltenders Joe Scanlan and Jeff Hardy shared the team`s sixth shutout.
– Evanston 3, Glenbrook South 2-Robert Gary, Marcello Ferrigno and Fernando Ferrer each scored a goal as No. 4 Evanston (14-0-2, 7-0) remained unbeaten in the Central Suburban League. ”I`m a little surprised to still be unbeaten,” said Evanston coach Tom Chmela. ”But it seems these guys are committed to doing whatever it takes to win.”
– St. Charles 2, Streamwood 1-No. 5 St. Charles (14-1-2, 7-0) remained unbeaten in the Upstate Eight on Cory Lange`s unassisted goal 30 seconds into the second quarter. Lange also assisted on Nick Ellberg`s first-quarter goal. The Saints (14-1-2, 7-0) outshot Streamwood 22-5.
– Eisenhower 4, Thornridge 1-Gilberto Lopez bagged his 34th and 35th goals of the year and added an assist, and Felix Hurdado and Jose Delgado each scored a goal as No. 10 Eisenhower (14-0, 9-0) clinched at least a share of the SICA East title. ”We always have good teams, but overall I think this is the best one we`ve ever had,” said Eisenhower coach Jose Barrientos, whose Cardinals equaled a national single-game scoring record with 30 goals earlier in the year.
– St. Joseph 6, Proviso West 0-Patrick Sulin had three goals and goalkeeper Bryan Sirota got his fifth shutout for St. Joseph (9-3-2).
– Lake Zurich 3, Round Lake 0-Lake Zurich (7-4-4) got three goals from Jason Schmidle, and Andy Sphar posted his third shutout of the fall in goal.
– Antioch 9, Fenton 0-Antioch (8-5-2, 5-1 in the North Suburban Conference)
got two goals each from Craig Hanrahan and Mike Agree. Phil Rindlaub and John Schulz split the shutout in goal; each had one save.
– Naperville Central 1, Glenbard South 0-Todd Vanecko scored the game`s only goal on a second-period pass from Jon Campbell. Mike Morici and Russ Randall split the shutout in goal for Naperville (7-6-3, 2-3-1 in the Du Page Valley Conference); the Naperville defense allowed Glenbard no shots on goal. Glenbard is 6-10-1, 1-5.
– Wheaton North 4, Glenbard East 0-Derek Hoffman had a pair of goals to lead Wheaton (6-5-2, 3-2-1 in the Du Page Valley Conference). Jeff Baird had seven saves to earn his sixth shutout of the season. Glenbard East is 12-4-2, 2-4.
– Deerfield 5, Maine West 0-David Lynn had a hat trick and Chris Schleiss and Jason Prass combined for nine saves to give Deerfield (10-3-2, 6-1-1 in the Central Suburban North) its sixth shutout of the season. – Wheaton Christian 4, Illiana Christian 2-Leigh Mikolajczyk, Andrew Mouw, Bob Schwaner and Dave Dominguez each scored as Wheaton Christian (8-5, 4-0) retained first place in the Private School League.
– Weber 2, Mt. Carmel 0-Greg Bierewski and Fred Laureano got the goals, both on assists from Emmanuel Serckpor, to lead Weber (3-12-1, 1-6 in the Catholic League). Goalkeeper Wes Szaja got the shutout.
– St. Laurence 2, Gordon Tech 0-Tim Lense and Ignacio Martinez had the goals and goaltender Mike Musial had 12 saves in his fourth shutout to lift St. Laurence (7-6-5 overall) in the Catholic League.
– Juarez 2, Farragut 0-Miguel Chavez and Victor Carrillo each scored a goal and goaltender Mauricio Solano had seven saves in his fifth shutout for Juarez (5-1-2, 1-3 in the Red-South).
– Niles North 1, Zion-Benton 0-Julian Taylor scored the goal and goalkeeper Danny Lee had 23 saves en route to the shutout for Niles North (6-8-1, 2-3-1) in the North Suburbn.
– Buffalo Grove 4, Elk Grove 2-Bjorn Torling, Mark Kotcherha, Dave Mangum and Jim Colvin each scored a goal to lift Buffalo Grove (9-6-1 overall) in the Mid-Suburban North.
– De Kalb 4, East Aurora 1-Mike Castro scored twice and assisted on a goal by Jeff Ryder, who had two assists. De Kalb improved to 13-2, 5-2 in the Upstate Eight.
– Brother Rice 1, Loyola 0-Tony Zec scored in the first quarter and Francisco Velasquez had 18 saves to notch his 10th shutout of the season.
– Palatine 2, Schaumburg 0-Jeff Doherty and Mike Kennedy scored for the seventh-ranked Pirates (12-2-3).
– Waukegan 1, Highland Park 1-Simon Breuer`s third-quarter goal gave Highland Park (7-6-2, 1-4-2) the tie and its first victory of the season in the CSL North. Robby Morrison scored in the first quarter for Waukegan (11-2-5).
– Stagg 1, Argo 1-Nick Giannakopoulos scored for Stagg (8-7-1, 5-3-1) and Ignacio Carrillo for Argo in the SICA North.
– Sycamore 1, Oswego 0-Bounphone Phonprasitscored in the second period and Ryan Weckerly had eight saves for Sycamore (6-8-1, 3-5) in the Little Seven.
GOLF
– Suburban Catholic Conference meet-Three teams finished the regulation 18 holes tied for the meet title at 353-St. Edward, Driscoll and Marmion. After comparing scores for the fifth men, Driscoll and St. Edward remained tied for the top. St. Edward was then awarded the team championship by virtue of its five conference dual meet victories; Driscoll had three. Marmion`s Jose Fernandez won the individual title with a 12-over-par 84 at St. Andrews in West Chicago. In a tie for second, appropriately, were St. Edward`s Dwayne Kotera and Driscoll`s Mike Vavrek with 86s.
– SICA West meet-Lockport placed four golfers in the top 10 to win the league title at Cog Hill No. 3 with a 334 total, nine strokes better than runner-up Andrew. The four scorers for Lockport were Todd Gneiwek and Mark Wesolowski, who tied for fourth with 83s, and Kevin Bauer and Tom Daugherty, who tied for eighth with 84s. Joliet West`s Tim Horvath shot an 8-over-par 80 to win the individual title by one stroke over Andrew`s Brian Wolcott.
– Northwest Suburban Conference meet-Lake Zurich won the conference meet with a 350 total and the overall conference title as well. Marian Central was the team runner-up. Lake Zurich`s Bears had two golfers finish in the top 10-third-place Brian Schroeder with an 83 and fifth-place Chris Prestagaard with an 84. Round Lake`s Mark McDonagh shot an 8-over-par 80 at Marengo Ridge Country Club to win the individual crown by three strokes.
– Mid-Suburban League meet-Barrington held the first-round lead by one stroke over Prospect 328-329. Conant is third with a 342 total. Barrington`s Alex Buecking and Rolling Meadows` Kevin Mohr both carded 5-over-par 77s to tie for the individual lead after one round. Barrington`s Nate Brown and Prospect`s Ken Lynn are tied for third at 78. The tournament, at the Arboretum Golf Course in Buffalo Grove, concludes Monday.
FIELD HOCKEY
– Lake Forest 1, Homewood-Flossmoor 0-Maureen O`Brien, who has 21 goals for the season, got the game`s only goal (12-1). Shelby Kahn got the shutout in goal.
