Wisconsin defensive tackle Don Davey has become the first player named four times to the GTE academic All-America University Division I football team.
”It`s real nice to be recognized for that kind of achievement that says the classroom is just as important as playing on the field,” Davey said.
Davey, a senior from Manitowoc, Wis., has a 3.58 grade-point average in mechanical engineering.
He led the Big 10 in tackles for loss at 24 and tied for quarterback sacks with seven this season, and set school records in tackles for loss for his career at 49 as well as for this year.
Davey was named the Badgers` most valuable player and selected for the all-conference team. He is to play in the Japan Bowl Jan. 12 and the Senior Bowl Jan. 19.
The team was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
