Bill Walsh, saying he expects to continue his television career, recommended Los Angeles Raiders quarterbacks coach Mike White for the vacant Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coaching job, a newspaper reported Saturday.
Walsh, who led the San Francisco 49ers to three Super Bowl championships, had been rumored to be Buccaneers owner Hugh Culverhouse`s top choice to replace the fired Ray Perkins.
But Walsh told the Tampa Tribune he`s close to signing a new contract with NBC and remaining the network`s No. 1 football analyst.
”I expect to sign with NBC and continue my television career,” Walsh said in Buffalo, where he was preparing for Sunday`s AFC championship game between the Raiders and the Bills.
Walsh`s current contract expires after Sunday`s game.
White, 54, was a consultant with the World League of American Football before moving to the Raiders in April 1990.
He previously was the head coach at Illinois and California.
Krueger said that only Bucs interim coach Richard Williamson has been interviewed for the head coaching job.
