If the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Art Institute or the Metropolitan Museum of Art has it in their collection, then it must be tasteful, right?
Well, that`s part of the reason for the success of reproduction pieces sold in museum gift shops.
It follows, then, that Le Musee, a new shop at 2308 N. Clark St., is oozing with the most assuredly tasteful items. After all, it`s stocked with select items from museum shops around the country and points beyond.
Convinced that everyone should have access to museum-quality pieces, owner Karen McRann has culled a collection of goods that spans ages and cultures. Emphasis at the shop is on jewelry, from Egyptian scarab earrings
(said to bring good luck) to elaborate gold-plated reproductions of pre-Columbian necklaces. Also to be had are T-shirts and sweatshirts, artists`
jigsaw puzzles, playing cards, note cards and calendars.
And if you want to bestow upon your hearth a certain magical aura or tap into purported curative powers, consider taking home the Egyptian goddess Selket. Standing 3 feet tall and radiantly finished in 23-karat gold, she`s an imposing and mystical presence. An imposing and mystical price, too, at $2,900. But remember, Selket was picked to guard the mortal remains of King Tut.
Le Musee (404-8100) is open from noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 to 5 p.m. Saturday.
