Are you looking for inexpensive, clean, safe accommodations when you travel?
How about these examples of lodging costs for two?
Near Florida`s Walt Disney World (Lake Wales) for $18, or a room with an all-you-can-eat breakfast in Ottawa for about $22 or a 250-acre country estate with tennis facilities in Vermont for under $25 a night.
During school holiday periods thousands of rooms in student residences in North America and abroad are available to the public at economical rates.
An updated 1991 edition of ”U.S. and Worldwide Travel Accommodations Guide” offers details on 700 residences that rent rooms.
The housing rates in the guide generally range from $12 to $24 a person a night in a single or twin room.
Depending on location, you also may have cooking facilities, access to inexpensive student restaurants and use of athletic areas such as a pool or tennis courts.
It`s doubtful you`ll find frills such as televisions or telephones in rooms. You also may find that you have to rent or supply linens and towels, walk down the hall to a shared washroom and abide by such restrictions as no alcohol on campus.
Keep in mind that these facilities usually are not limited to use by students; some even take families. Most of the rooms are available only during summer and perhaps during Christmas and spring breaks. A few facilities are available year-round.
The accommodations guide locates residences in North America, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Israel, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, Singapore, Thailand, West Africa and the West Indies.
For each listing you`ll find rates (and special discounts for visiting students and teachers, if available), the dates available, contact names and telephone numbers and activities in the area. Additional details are included, such as whether linen is supplied, if children are welcome, when apartments are available and if a student residence has handicapped access.
One important item to check is location. Many campuses are not downtown. If you want to take in night life, commuting will be frustrating. On the other hand, if you are driving, campuses on the edge of town with free parking may be ideal.
This year, 75 new residences have been added in the United States, bringing the total to 375. The directory also includes 20 new Canadian listings, for a total to 81 residences offering 10,000 rooms this summer.
The directory is especially helpful for large foreign cities. It lists, for example, 35 residences in London. For Paris you`ll find contacts for four residences offering beds for under $19, a bed-and-breakfast association and 12 organizations that offer domitory, single and double rooms averaging $11 to $15 a person a night, continental breakfast included.
The guide also includes 94 YMCA accommodation centers, European home and farm stays starting at $8 a night, bed-and-breakfast reservation services, home-exchange organizations and contact information for airlines and tourist information offices.
