Standard Time, Volume 2: Intimacy Calling (Wynton Marsalis, Columbia).
Wynton Marsalis is slowly overcoming his prodigious skill. On this new recording of standards (which curiously follows the one labeled Volume 3), the trumpet wonder extends the new melodic reach he has attained through the study of figures like Louis Armstrong. His lyricism is always accomplished and at times quite lovely. Now what he needs is to heed the call of intimacy and let a little of the passion out, even at the expense of perfection and earnestness. The only reason for making this suggestion, I must add, is that Marsalis` potential is so enormous that I hate to see any of it withheld.
