The estranged wife of a slain Bensenville man and a male friend were charged with the husband`s murder and ordered held without bond at a preliminary court hearing Wednesday.

Murder charges were filed against Guinevere A. Garcia, 32, of 3706 N. Spalding Ave., and John Gonzalez, 28, of 2958 W. Nelson St., both in Chicago, in the shotgun slaying of George Garcia, 60. A passerby found the victim shot in the chest early Tuesday, next to his pickup truck in the parking lot of the apartment building where he lived at 920 W. Irving Park Rd., according to Bensenville Police Chief Michael Toomey.

Guinevere Garcia and Gonzalez were arrested Tuesday night in a tavern in the city. Investigators said the woman had earlier called Bensenville police to report they would be at that location and implied she could implicate her companion in the slaying.

However, Assistant State`s Atty. Charles Jacques told Du Page Judge Eugene Wojcik at the preliminary hearing that although the gun thought to have been the murder weapon belonged to Gonzalez, investigators believe Guinevere Garcia fired the fatal shot.

Police said the weapon had been recovered from Gonzalez`s car and taken to a crime laboratory for examination.

Garcia, a longtime Bensenville area resident, was employed at a Franklin Park manufacturing firm. According to Toomey, he and his wife had been separated for a time.
