Fire officials have been unable to determine the cause of a Wednesday afternoon fire that resulted in $35,000 in damage to one of Geneva`s landmark downtown buildings.

But no foul play or arson is suspected, Fire Chief Frank Johnson said Thursday.

The fire began in an upstairs apartment at the 150-year-old Wrate Block Building at 1st and State Streets in Geneva. Damage was concentrated primarily in the apartment, according to Johnson, but he added that the Little Owl, a restaurant and bar below the apartment, sustained smoke damage.

Apartment tenants and restaurant patrons were evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
