– In a July 24 story in Section 1, Surgeon General Antonia C. Novello mistakenly quoted 1960s-era radical Abbie Hoffman as having said, ”Violence has become as American as apple pie.” She apparently had in mind a remark from the mid-`60s that Bartlett`s Familiar Quotations attributes to black activist H.G. ”Rap” Brown: ”Violence is necessary; it is as American as cherry pie.”

– The Inc. column July 25 erroneously listed Jack Gilford, the actor, as having his 84th birthday that day. Mr. Gilford died June 4, 1990.

– An article in some Tempo sections July 25 erroneously implied that the show ”Laughing America” is a product of Contintental Cablevision. The show appears on Continental Cablevision, but it is produced by TCI-Illinois.

– The headline on a high school baseball story in the July 25 Sports section stated incorrectly that four teams were seeking the state baseball title. The Illinois High School Summer Tournament is a double-elimination competition so all eight teams were still playing after the July 25 opening round.

The Tribune regrets the errors.
