The Illinois Black Republican Council on Sunday endorsed Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas, stating that he was the embodiment of the American work ethic, a positive role model for African-Americans and an antidote to affirmative action programs and quotas.
”Clarence Thomas never denied the presence of racism,” said David Neely, a John Marshall Law School professor and council member, at a news conference. ”Let`s not get civil rights confused with affirmative acton and quotas. Affirmative action is not doing what it did 20 years ago. They`re not working for the people of America . . . there is a growing underclass.”
Neely said Thomas was needed to provide an African-American presence on the nation`s highest court.
