A judge refused to allow bail Thursday for Seymour Schlager while he appeals his conviction and 13-year prison sentence for the attempted murder of his wife, Diane, in their Highland Park home last February.

Robert Will, the attorney for Schlager, said his client was able to post

”a substantial bail.” He said Schlager, a microbiologist, has been offered jobs at two medical clinics.

But Lake County prosecutors John Kornak and George Strickland argued that it would be a risk to grant Schlager bail. Kornak said Schlager, 42, speaks four languages-English, German, Spanish and Yiddish-and probably could survive anywhere in the world.

Lake County Circuit Judge Henry Tonigan agreed and refused to grant an appeal bond.
