Chicago police officer David Strain was posthumously honored Wednesday for his tireless work in fighting crime.

Strain, who died of a heart attack Sept. 28, five days after his 37th birthday, was chosen from 80 officers who were nominated for their efforts to reduce crime.

Strain, a member of the East Chicago District plainclothes tactical team, made 578 felony arrests and 622 misdemeanor arrests and recovered 238 guns-a record number for tactical officers. He also received four commendations from the department-for catching a burglar, a rapist and an armed robber and for solving a homicide.

”At a quarter to 2, working 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. shifts, he would say,

`Let`s go on one more pass-through,` ” said Sgt. Dave Schmidt, Strain`s partner. ”He always felt he could make a difference.”

The award was made by the statewide Illinois Crime Prevention Association and SecurityLink, an Oak Brook-based electronic security company.
