VW offers layoff protection: Volkswagen United States said Tuesday it will cover car payments and insurance for up to 12 months for new Volkswagen buyers laid off because of the recession. The plan is designed to restore confidence in consumers reluctant to buy a new car, the German car maker said. Between now and March 31, if someone buys or leases a Volkswagen and is laid off within three years because of the recession, the company will pay up to $500 a month for car payments and insurance, the company said.
