A Romanian Orthodox priest said Wednesday that he will quit the priesthood as well as the Chicago parish where bullets were fired through his rectory apartment window Sunday, an incident that he feels is related to long- simmering differences between him and an opposition faction in the congregation.

Rev. George Gage said he has received no support from Bishop Nathaniel Popp, who heads his church`s American diocese. They met for more than three hours Tuesday at the bishop`s office in Jackson, Mich., to discuss the controversy at the church. The church is now under round-the-clock police surveillance, Gage said.

Popp indicated he would send a letter officially releasing Gage from his duties at St. Mary Romanian Orthodox Church, 4225 N. Central Ave., when the school year ends.
