The following are suggested Kennedy Expressway alternate streets with heightened police presence. (Passenger cars only; trucks should continue using the expressway.)

To approach downtown from the north and northwest, use:

– Elston Avenue

– Clybourn Avenue

– Lake Shore Drive

To approach downtown from the west, use:

– the Eisenhower Expressway

– Washington Street

– Madison Street

– Jackson Boulevard

– Roosevelt Road

To approach downtown from the south, use:

– Michigan Avenue

– State Street

– Wabash Avenue

To bypass downtown, use:

– Ashland Avenue

– Western Avenue

– Cicero Avenue

– Central Avenue

– (From the south) Ashland Avenue to Ogden Avenue to northbound Kennedy Expressway

By train

Extra parking available at these Metra stations:

On the Chicago & North Western Northwest line:

– Arlington Park (750 spaces)

– Des Plaines (100 spaces)

– Park Ridge (100 spaces)

– Edison Park, Chicago (75 spaces)

On the Milwaukee District West line:

– Schaumburg (500 spaces)

– Medinah (150 spaces)

– Mars, Chicago (150 spaces)

Bus to train

Special parking will be available at these sites served by Pace suburban buses headed to Metra/CTA stations. Park in designated commuter lots. Buses stop at: – Old Orchard, Skokie: By Marshall Field`s.

– Edens Plaza, Wilmette: By Carson Pirie Scott & Co.

– Northbrook Court, Northbrook: By Neiman Marcus.

– Woodfield Mall, Schaumburg: By the upper level entrance to J.C. Penney.

– Randhurst Shopping Center, Mt. Prospect: By west entrance, Montgomery Ward. – Pace Park-`n`-Ride: Busch Parkway and Commerce Drive, Buffalo Grove.

CTA Rapid Transit

– O`HARE LINE: Transfer at Division Street station to shuttle bus to bypass closed Dearborn Street subway. Bus travels through Loop via Milwaukee, Desplaines, Washington, State, Harrison, Morgan and Van Buren to Racine Avenue station on Congress-Douglas line.

– CONGRESS-DOUGLAS LINE: Transfer at Racine Avenue station to shuttle bus to bypass closed Dearborn Street subway. Bus travels through Loop via Harrison, Dearborn, Wacker, Lake, Jefferson, Fulton and Milwaukee to Division Street station on O`Hare line.

– HOWARD-ENGLEWOOD-JACKSON PARK LINE: Southbound trains bypass closed State Street subway via Ravenswood elevated trackage, making station stops at Chicago Avenue, Merchandise Mart, Clark/Lake, State/Lake, Randolph/Wabash, Madison/Wabash and Adams/Wabash. Trains travel on Dan Ryan trackage to rejoin regular route, making first station stop at 35th Street. Northbound trains follow same route in reverse.

CTA express bus from North Side

– No. 147 Outer Drive Express: Howard Street CTA station, local via Sheridan Road to Foster Avenue, express via Lake Shore Drive to Michigan Avenue (20 cent surcharge).

– No. 136 Sheridan/LaSalle Express: Devon/Sheridan/Broadway, local via Sheridan Road and Marine Drive to Irving Park Road, express via Lake Shore Drive to LaSalle Street.

– No. 146 Marine-Michigan Express: Berwyn Avenue CTA station, local via Marine Drive and Inner Drive to Belmont Avenue, express via Lake Shore Drive to Michigan Avenue.

– No. 135 Wilson/LaSalle Express: Wilson/Ravenswood, local via Wilson Avenue, Clarendon Avenue, Irving Park Road and Inner Drive to Belmont Avenue, express via Lake Shore Drive to LaSalle Street.

– No. 145 Wilson/Michigan Express: Same as No. 135 except travels to Michigan Avenue.

CTA express bus from South Side

– No. 2 Hyde Park Express: Drexel Square, local via Hyde Park Boulevard, Lake Park Avenue and 47th Street, express via Lake Shore Drive to Michigan Avenue/ State Street (20 cent surcharge).

– No. 6 Jeffrey Express: 103rd/Stony Island, local via Jeffrey Boulevard through Jackson Park to Hyde Park Boulevard, Lake Park Avenue and 47th Street, express via Lake Shore Drive to Michigan Avenue/State Street (20 cent surcharge).

– No. 14 South Lake Shore Express: 103rd/Stony Island, local via Jeffrey Boulevard to 67th Street, express via Lake Shore Drive to Michigan Avenue/

Madison Street/Washington Street (20 cent surcharge).
