Hoffman Estates trustees plan to change their fiscal year to coincide with the calendar year.

About 90 percent of the state`s municipalities end their fiscal year April 30, according to Doug Ellsworth, the village`s finance director.

But municipalities must file their property tax levies with counties the last Tuesday of December. So finance directors must begin in the fall figuring out how much revenue from property taxes will be needed for a budget that won`t be approved until the following April or May.

During a Finance Committee meeting Monday night, trustees voted unanimously in favor of changing the fiscal year to begin Jan. 1 instead of May 1.
