Body Count

Body Count (Sire) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)

Rapper Ice-T branches out into hard rock with the quartet that backed him up on last year`s Lollapalooza tour. In the wake of the riots in his native South-Central Los Angeles, Ice-T`s lyrics about the hate-hate relationship between police and young blacks have a stomach-churning immediacy, and the pathology in songs such as ”Momma`s Gotta Die Tonight” is so unrelenting that it can only be taken ironically, if not as self-parody. But on the stereotype-bashing ”There Goes the Neighborhood,” the humor, message and music coalesce brilliantly, and Body Count proves equally adept at working Slayer`s speed-metal turf (”Bowels of the Devil,” ”Voodoo”) or delving into King`s X-style melodicism (”The Winner Loses,” ”C-Note”).
