This may not be the most commercial record of Crowell`s career-his
”Diamonds and Dirt” of the late `80s was-but this is easily one of its best. Produced to perfection, with a throbbing sound that is out on the pop-ish progressive end of the country spectrum, it treats life in all its surreal hurtfulness without neglecting its epic joys. On the uptempos there is sometimes a hint of Presley freneticism, while the ballads exhibit a visionary, contemplative quality. This is the work of a talented songwriter-performer-musician who refuses to be pigeonholed into any one category.
