”Steady” Freddie Jackson, with his assured, smooth vocal style has managed to remain a permanent fixture on the pop charts for nearly a decade, despite releasing what basically amounts to the same record. Time and time again, he has assembled a collection of so-so pop ballads, and time and time again he has lifted the material to a level of artistry it may not have deserved. The lyrics may border on the insipid, and the music is sometimes little more than the aural equivalent of beige, but Jackson`s delivery is always eloquent and moving. This time a few peppy dance tracks have been scattered amid the torch parade. But Jackson`s arena remains the swirling, sensitive ballad, and that`s where he does his best work, especially on tracks like ”Trouble” and ”All I Ever Ask.” Just in terms of style and longevity, he will go down as one of the legends of the game.
