With her strong, vibrant voice, Mary J. Blige gives every note all she`s got but ultimately poor production dooms her rookie release. Bland
arrangements and silly lyrics (what she needs is some unlimited self-confidence) that would make Bon Jovi blush come slogging out of the speakers in a seemingly endless parade that make the barely 3 plus minute songs seem much longer. Only her cover of Chaka Khan`s ”Sweet Thing” and the title track, a combo deal that mixes the music of the Ohio Players` ”Pride and Passion” with the words from Debra Law`s ”Very Special,” emerge to break the tedium.
