Hurdling this New Zealander`s invective can be a high leap indeed, especially on ”White Water” (”We poison and we plunder/Thinking all the time/How to make a buck/Out of suicide”). Laing`s use of song as political tool can be wearying, but her search for justice seems genuine-and she`s no latecomer to the ”green” craze; her previous LP, 1988`s ”South,” spawned the dance hit ”Soviet Snow,” about fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear accident. ”New on Earth” relies less on the synthesizers of ”South” but offers a similarly textured ambience with a guitar-bass-keyboards-drum lineup.
