I Wanna Rock Right Now (Jive)

(STAR)(STAR)

Mr. Lee`s second full-length release veers away from the original deep house grooves that defined his 1990 debut and instead draws heavily upon an array of samples ranging from the unusual (Quincy Jones` ”I Bet You Wouldn`t Hurt Me”) to the so-overdone-it`s-time-we-d eclared-a-moratorium-backed-up-by-force-if-necessary-on-this-one (Parliament`s ”Atomic Dog”) for inspiration. While the Quincy Jones-based ”Do It to Me,” featuring a lilting vibraphone solo, a cover of Stevie Wonder`s ”Hey Love,” done as a duet between fellow Chicagoan R. Kelly and a sampled Wonder and the fiery ”I Wanna Rock” are entertaining pieces, drab reruns like ”Get Off” (Foxy) ”Doggie Dance” (Parliament), ”I Like Girls” (Fatback Band), ”Mo Funky Stuff”

(Kool and the Gang) and ”Sex Thang” (The Whispers) do little more than give us a peek into Mr. Lee`s no doubt fine record collection.
