Body and Soul

Archie Shepp and Richard Davis (Enja).

Tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp, in the liner notes to this 1989 recording, lists Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis and John Coltrane as the two greatest influences on his sound. You can hear what he means in all of his mature work. Davis’s affinity for straight blues and Coltrane’s for extremity of sound and harmony come together in Shepp’s work to express something fundamental about the saxophone. This recording is first-rate.
