A 41-year-old Calumet City man escaped serious injury Tuesday when his jacket zipper deflected a bullet from a shot fired into a Pace bus on the South Side, police said.
“What a lucky young man he is,” said Pullman Area Detective Joanne Ryan. “That’s absolutely bizarre.”
Shortly after the shooting, police captured a man suspected of firing the shot and identified him as John McGowan, 19, of 10352 S. Peoria St.
McGowan was charged Tuesday night with aggravated discharge of a firearm, Ryan said. He is scheduled to appear in Felony Court on Wednesday.
The victim was on the Route 352 bus in the 10500 block of South Halsted Street just before 11 a.m. Tuesday when someone yelled an anti-gang remark, Ryan said.
A man who had just gotten off the bus allegedly heard the remark, pulled a .25-caliber handgun, fired a shot into the bus and fled, Ryan said.
